More proof that PR works…

Posted by Steve Loynes August 27 2009 10:24am

We recently started working with Resolver Systems, a company that develops an advanced, programmable spreadsheet called Resolver One.

Now, given that the spreadsheet has been around a while, and that Microsoft Excel dominates the scene, we had to don a few more thinking caps than normal when developing a PR programme for Resolver.

After much research, strategy and brainstorms (with and without beer) we came up with our ‘killer app.’

Being super-powerful, Resolver One is able to number crunch way beyond ‘standard’ spreadsheets such as Microsoft Excel and its lookalikes. The target market is ‘quants’ – the big-brained people that analyse reams of data to turn it from ‘numbers’ to ‘insight.’

So, we figured, let’s use Resolver One to work out some really complicated things – the answers to which will be of interest to the target market and media.

We’re quite pleased with our first foray; a general election predictor. Robert ‘three brains’ Smithson at Resolver created a new model to predict the forthcoming general election results using Resolver One, and it showed the Tories are on course to romp it. It’s a particularly strong model that takes into account that different parties lose their voters to other parties in different proportions.

We shared the model with the FT’s Westminster correspondent, who liked it, blogged it and things took off from there. Political Betting, a popular blog, also covered the prediction in two separate posts which led to a phenomenal 1000+ comments in follow-on debate.

Within just 36 hours, the Resolver website experienced over ten times the usual amount of  unique visitors and a jump of over  1000 per cent in downloads of an evaluation version of Resolver One.

Suffice to say, we’re working on some similar gripping content to further demonstrate the power of Resolver One. And, hey, feel free to suggest a topic…
